Prescriptions
Important change – February 2026
Don Valley Healthcare will no longer accept medication requests via email.
Medication requests must be submitted using one of the following methods only:
-
The NHS App, or
-
AccuRx, accessed via our website by clicking “Contact Us Online” on the homepage, or
-
In person, by completing a prescription request slip and posting it into the prescription request box at any reception
We are making this change because, unlike emails, the NHS App and AccuRx are securely linked to our clinical system. This helps reduce errors, improve safety, and ensure medication requests are processed accurately.
We strongly recommend registering for the NHS App as soon as possible to ensure a smooth transition.
Guidance on how to download the NHS App is available on our website: NHS App & How to videos to help you get the most out of the NHS App.
Thankyou for your understanding and cooperation.
Ordering Your Medication
If your doctor agrees, you can get repeat or acute prescriptions without seeing the doctor each time. Acute prescriptions are for medications not needed regularly. Only previously authorized medications can be requested.
Please allow 2 working days for processing. You can request prescriptions by:
-
The NHS App
-
AccuRx – via our website (click “Contact Us Online” on the homepage)
-
In person – complete a prescription request slip and post it into the prescription request box at any reception
If there are any concerns, we will contact you.
NHS Charges
Prescription charges apply in England only. In Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales, prescriptions are free.
- Prescription (per item): £9.65
- 12-month prepayment certificate (PPC): £111.60
- 3-month PPC: £31.25
If you need four or more prescription items in three months or more than 14 items in 12 months, a PPC might save you money.
For telephone advice, call 0845 850 0030 or buy/renew a PPC online.
For more details on prescription exemptions and fees, visit the NHS website.
Help with NHS costs
In England, around 90% of prescription items are dispensed free. This includes exemptions from charging for those on low incomes, such as:
- those on specific benefits or through the NHS Low Income Scheme
- those who are age exempt
- those with certain medical conditions
- More information is available at NHS Choices
Prescriptions and The NHS App
If you take medicine regularly, you'll usually have a repeat prescription. This lets you order your medication without seeing a GP until your next review.
You can ask your pharmacy for your medicine if your GP has set this up (EPS). Otherwise, order from your GP each time.
You can order repeat prescriptions in 2 ways:
- Through the NHS app or other platforms
- By visiting the practice with a written request

NHS South Yorkshire launches ‘Medicines Waste’ campaign!
Return your unwanted medicines to your Pharmacy!
South Yorkshire residents are being encouraged to return any unwanted medicines to a pharmacy.
People are also encouraged to only order the medicines they need, check their medicines bag before they leave their pharmacy and to tell their GP if they no longer want/need a medication.
These messages aim to reduce harm caused to the environment from medicines pollution as well as potential harm to pets and people at home, and to prevent medicines over-ordering and stockpiling.
If unwanted and unneeded medicines are returned whilst still in the pharmacy those medicines can be safely re-used.
Dr David Crichton, Chief Medical Officer, NHS South Yorkshire said:
“Returning unwanted medicines to a local pharmacy is a simple and effective action that can help to protect nature and ourselves.
“When medications get flushed down a toilet or put in bins they can get into our soil and waterways and cause harmful pollution.
“If you have unwanted medication you can return it to a pharmacy for safe disposal.
“This includes any products with medication in them, such as creams, liquids, medicine bottles, used patches and inhalers.”
“We would ask that patients only order the medications that they need.”
Inhalers in particular, are incredibly important to dispose of correctly as they can leak greenhouse gasses long after the medication has been used.
NHS South Yorkshire urges all residents to check their medicines supply before ordering more, and to check their medicines bags before leaving the pharmacy to help protect supply chains and our environment.
