What is a Vasectomy?
A vasectomy or male sterilisation, is a surgical procedure to cut or seal the tubes that carry a man's sperm to permanently prevent pregnancy.
It's usually carried out under local anaesthetic, where you're awake but don't feel any pain, and roughly takes about 20 minutes.
A vasectomy works by stopping sperm getting into a man's semen, the fluid that he ejaculates. The tubes that carry sperm from a man's testicles to the penis are cauterised and divided, which means that when a man ejaculates, the semen has no sperm in it and a female's egg therefore can't be fertilised.
- A vasectomy is 99% effective.
- It's considered permanent, so once it's done you don't have to think about contraception again.
- It doesn't affect your sex drive or ability to enjoy sex. You'll still have erections and ejaculate, but your semen won't contain sperm.
- You'll need to use contraception for at least 5 months after the operation, because sperm will still be in the tubes leading to the penis.
- You will need to provide a 4 month post operative semen sample to confirm that the operation has been successful (there is a 1% chance the operation will fail)
- A vasectomy doesn't protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs), so you may need to use condoms as well.
The Booking Process
Once we have received your self referral or GP referral, our administrators will make contact to book a face to face appointment with Dr Grimwood or Dr McHardy, respectively.
Please note there is a waiting list of around 2 months as of June 2024.
If you have a partner, we reccomend you discuss it with them before you decide. If possible, you should both agree to the procedure but it is not a legal requirement to get your partner's permission.
Prior to attending for your consultation, you will need to watch the video to the right. This video has been produced by Dr Grimwood and outlines what the vasectomy procedure invovles and any potential risks or complications that are associated with the operation. This video also explained the potential failure rates of the operation and the need for semen sample testing required 4 months following the procedure.
The GP will not be able to proceed with the initial consultation if you have not watched the above video prior to attending and risks your consultation being rearranged and put back on to the waiting list.
Initial Consultation and Procedure
During your face to face consultation Dr Grimwood will ask about your circumstances, take a short medical history and do a physical examination before agreeing to the procedure.
At this time you will also be asked if you're certain you don't want any more children or don't want children at all.
All being well, Dr Grimwood will then run through a vasectomy consent form that will require your signatue as well as a vasectomy checklist. Once these forms have been signed, Dr Grimwood will be able to discuss avaliable surgical dates and book your vasectomy operation.
